Detailed Album Description:

Singer-songwriter Jason K. Thompson's first full-length album is an emotional journey with a common theme: finding joy in a depressing world. "Consumed" contains mostly funky blues-rock style songs, with the title track being the funkiest and hardest-rocking song on the CD.

It begins with a typical, guitar-driven blues tune called "Alarm Clock Blues". Then the depression hits bottom with "Driving Slowly", a plea to God for help in a pit of despair. The third track, "Sketching Frame", discovers that we are all part of God's beautiful creation and begins to lift us from despair into hope.

The fourth and fifth tracks are the first real "up" in the emotional roller-coaster to which someone suffering with depression will relate. “Church Date” is a silly, 50s-style doo-wop satirizing the euphoria of church youth-group relationship beginnings, and “Keep It Clean” is a funky and comical reminder to practice good moral hygiene.

The sixth track, “Try Me”, is a piano ballad urging the listener to place his/her faith in Jesus as he invites all people to himself. In the seventh, “Love Lifted Me” (a reworking of an old church hymn of the same name), permanent joy has finally been found in God’s forgiveness of sins and a life of service to him. The title track, then, is the pinnacle of joy that the new life in Jesus has to offer.

The ninth track is a reminder that “church people” are not perfect, and is a venting by the songwriter of the futility of the American church. And the tenth is a song written about the writer’s grandpa for his 80th birthday about his enduring legacy that will be carried on within the family.

Song Lyrics:

Alarm Clock Blues

My alarm goes off, and I just hit the snooze.

My alarm goes off, and I just hit the snooze.

I got nothin’ to win, baby, and everything to lose.

So I'll roll on over and lay my head back down.

I'll just roll on over and lay my head back down.

'Cause I got nothin’ but stress as soon as my feet hit that ground.

Well all I wanna do is stay in bed with you.

Yeah, all I wanna do is stay in bed with you.

You know you drive me crazy, baby, when you do the things you do.

So my alarm will go off, but I'll just hit the snooze.

My alarm will go off, but I'll just hit the snooze.

I got nothin’ to win today; I got the alarm clock blues.

Driving Slowly

Verse 1:

I'm driving slowly, trying not to reach my destination

I've got three quarters of a tank; I'm pulling into a Shell station

My only relief is procrastination

'Cause every minute in this car is a minute avoiding the degradation

Of reporting to a class that I'm not prepared for

or going to a home where I'm not cared for

or clocking in at work, but what am I there for?

Chorus:

But God came to rescue me

He came to set me free

Oh Lord, please show me the way out of this mess

Please help me believe that you know best; I need you.

Verse 2:

I'm driving slowly and waiting for a revelation

Deep in my soul I don't know what to do in my situation

I know God is there, but does he care for my desperation

To get me through this, I'll need much more than just information

Bridge:

When God replies, how will I respond? Will I be ready to make a change?

Or will I keep thinking the same poisonous thoughts so day after day remains the same?

Sketching Frame

Verse 1:

A frozen moon keeps watch over Lake Champlain

The glassy waters whisper to me

The dark silhouette of the Adirondack hills

Guard the lake’s serenity

Chorus 1:

It’s God who made the sea.  Across the crystal lake, the mountains sing His name

He who created me is an architect of beauty, and we are His sketching frame

Verse 2:

The ocean waves roll in at the Venice Beach pier

The seagulls sing the song of life

Exquisite shells formed by mysterious creatures

Come in with every new tide

Chorus 2:

It’s God who made the sea.  The gentle crashing waves are whispering His name

He who created me is an architect of beauty, and we are His sketching frame

Part 2:

Take a look around and see; the truth is in the beauty.

The desert winds testify

Put down the phone, turn off the Xbox; put on your shoes and socks, and

Go, take a walk outside

Palo Duro Canyon; the Rocky Mountains

His presence cannot be denied

Nobody can undo the power of this truth

From all of nature it cries

Go, take a walk outside

His presence cannot be denied

From all of nature it cries

Church Date

Intro:

So there's this girl in Sunday School; I think she's sweet and really cool. Well I'm a little short on dough, but I know a place where we can go: we'll go on a church date!

Verse 1:

I'll pick her up at a quarter to nine, and we'll get there just in time. We'll take it place in the sanctuary; wouldn't it be a great place to get married?

Interlude 1:

We'll sit on the third pew and sing “Amazing Grace”. Then we'll go to Wendy's for lunch and stuff our face. It'll be the best date ever. What we start here might just last forever.

Interlude 2:

If it goes well we'll be back on Wednesday night, and maybe Christmas Eve by the candlelight.

Verse 2:

We're sitting here and I think there's a chance the prayer leader may ask us to hold hands. I'll give the preacher another “amen” 'cause I'm not ready for this date to end.

Keep It Clean

Verse 1:

Everywhere you go, everything you do: keep it clean, keep it clean. You're all alone, nobody's watching you: keep it clean, keep it clean.

Verse 2:

Greed, lust and pride will destroy your life, keep it clean, keep it clean. (Repeat)

Verse 3:

We're all tempted to do something wrong; keep it clean, keep it clean. And when you're tempted just remember this song; keep it clean, keep it clean.

Verse 4:

Sin will kill ya. Sin will kill ya; keep it clean, keep it clean. (Repeat)

Try Me

Verse 1:

All the lights are off in his house, as he sits there alone.

And he sits in silence and holds his head in his hands.

They buried his brother today, now his lifelong friend is gone.

They told him to pray, but he doesn't think that Jesus will understand

Chorus 1:

But he says, "try me", Jesus says "try me".

I've been there, I've buried friends and brothers.

Come to me. You'll find peace and comfort if you try me.

Verse 2:

With a kiss he was betrayed by one of his friends

And thirty pieces of silver is all that it took.

They bound him and spat in his face. They abused the Prince of Peace

Then lie after lie and charge after charge he answered with only a look.

Chorus 2:

"Try me", Jesus says "try me".

They brought witnesses, but none could condemn

He loved them and wished they had listened to him when he said, "Try me."

Bridge:

Now he's waiting with open arms.

He won't wait on you forever.

How long will you ignore the savior of the world?

Chorus 3:

When he says, "Try me", Jesus says "Try me.

"I'm here, I'm calling; open your eyes.

You might be surprised what you find if you try me."

Love Lifted Me

Verse 1:

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,

Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more

But the Master of the sea who heard my despairing cry,

From the waters lifted me. Now safe am I

Chorus:

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!

When nothing else could help, Love lifted me

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!

When nothing else could help Love lifted me

Verse 2:

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves

He will lift you by his love, Out of the angry waves

Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs,

Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

Bridge:

I will praise the one who rescued me

I will praise the one who died for me

Amazing love; how can it be?

His amazing love has lifted me

Consumed

Verse 1:

I do all the kinds of things you want me to

Then I go to bed at night and think of you

I want everybody to know you love them, too

I can’t help it, God, I’m obsessed with you

Chorus:

I’m consumed, consumed by your love for me

I’m obsessed; I wanna be everything you want me to be

Verse 2:

You are the air I breathe and my heartbeat

Use all of me from my head to my feet

The Club

Verse 1:

On Sunday morning we're going to the club

If you have nice clothes you can come along

You don't have to do a thing if you don't want to

You can just sit in back and listen to the songs

Chorus:

Welcome to the club; it's nice to meet you!

We've got volunteers who signed up to smile and greet you

Drop your sins at the door and pick 'em up when you go

Step right in now; you don't wanna be late for the show

Verse 2:

At some places you need steel-toed boots

But at our club flip flops are fine all year

We all love our preacher, and you'll love him too

He says all the things that we love to hear

Bridge:

I'd like to give my life to Jesus, but I don't think I want the pastor to have my e-mail

It's the brand-new American way: if you never really invest you can never fail

Verse 3:

On Sunday morning it's the place to be

It might even help your career if you're seen a few times

They may ask you to witness but don't worry; you don't have to

That would risk interrupting your comfortable paradigm

Grandpa's Lessons

Verse 1:

Let me think about the lessons my grandpa's taught to me: Always be true to your one and only.

Take special orders when cooking on the grill. I pray I don't forget, and I know I never will

Be silent and be thought a fool, or speak and remove all doubt. These are the lessons I will never be without.

Chorus 1:

His ball don't fly off the tee like it used to, and Grandma has to repeat herself sometimes.

But now there's four generations still learning from him. His teaching heart is always in its prime.

Verse 2:

Let me think about the lessons my grandpa's taught to us: always be a gentleman; don't ever raise a fuss.

These are the lessons I've taken to heart: don't back down from your convictions; always finish what you start.

Well nothing lasts forever and one day our bodies will be gone. But the lessons we pass down to our grandkids will go on and on.

Chorus 2:

His ball don't fly off the tee like it used to. And we all have to repeat ourselves sometimes. But now there's four generations still learning from him. His teaching heart is always in its prime. His teaching heart is always in its prime.
